Natural curly hair care: some tips to start your journey
Sooner or later, we all get there: the enlightenment, the moment you realise your natural beauty is the only one that can make you shine your brightest. But you have to start out right! The first steps to start re-establishing your natural curl are quite easy but really, really important, and take consistency and patience: here's what our experts recommend.
Heat is one of the most harmful enemies for your curls health, because it opens cuticles turning them dry, brittle and damaged: that is the reason why eliminating it is the very first thing to do. First of all hair straighteners: absolutely banned, always and forever! In addition, when possible, it would be ideal to let hair dry in the open air; though, if it is unimaginable for you not to dry your hair - or if the weather does not allow you to keep it wet - set your hair-dryer at a medium-low temperature and with a lot of patience dry your hair using a diffuser.
Common hair care products often include misleading chemicals, that make your curls look better in the short term but do actually dry and damage them. Here are the chemicals you must get rid of:
- Sulphates: they aggressively remove sebum from your hair, drying both hair and skin.
- Silicones: they do form around the hair shaft a film that makes it impossible for your hair to breathe and oxygenate.
- Mineral oils: they are made out of petrolatum, so they do not nourish your hair but they only seal it, not allowing it to breathe.
- Alcohol and fragrances: they dry curls and immediately turn them more dry and brittle.
Very important: in the beginning you will feel like your curls are more dry, brittle or greasy than before, but it is normal! It's a transitional phase, where they are detoxing from chemicals - and it takes a little time for them to find their natural balance again.
Wash your curls just once, twice a week at most, and be careful not to touch them with your hands too often: this will allow your skin to balance its natural production of sebum, and you will gradually find your hair clean and protected for a longer time.
If your curls look frizzy or unruly to you, do not comb them - you would make it worse! Curls must never be combed or detangled when they are dry, because they might easily break: it is better for you to apply a leave-in moisturizing product, such as Cream or Detangling Spray, and distribute it with your hands gently rubbing your hair.
Disclaimer: this is some basic advice, that applies for every curl type; though, everyone of us is different, and has different needs: we highly recommend to try, try and try again, until you find the best treatment for you to shine your brightest!
