Overhydration: how to recognize and counter it
Do you know what overhydration is?
As you can guess from the word itself, it is an excess of hydration that occurs due to the exaggerated use of products containing oil, butter or wetting agents. It mostly happens in the wetter seasons, when, in the hope of counteracting the frizz effect and to ensure that our curls stay well nourished, we use a mix of high-hydration shampoos, masks and creams. However, if you notice your hair becoming heavy, almost greasy, if it loses the bounce effect and sags easily, if the ends break and are dry... you need to run for cover! Luckily the remedy is simple: PROTEINS. Just include a protein-based product in your routine a couple of times a month - like the Restoring Pre-Shampoo Mask - to balance hydration and restructure fragile and damaged curls.
Here are some tips for balancing hydration and protein:
1. Help yourself with the heat
Apply the Restoring Pre-Shampoo Mask on wet hair and let it act for at least 30 minutes: for even greater effectiveness, wrap the lengths in a warm towel, the heat will open the cuticles and the active ingredients will penetrate even deeper!
2. Not only Pre-Shampoo Mask
To ensure the right amount of protein to your curls you can also use the Soothing Conditioner. As an intensive treatment, the Pre-Shampoo Mask is not recommended to use it more than 2 or 3 times a month, while the Conditioner can be applied as the final step of each wash day, it will help counteract over-hydration and keep the curls soft and silky.
3. Don't overdo with protein
Protein overload is as problematic as over-hydration and causes dryness, excessive brittleness and loss of luster. It is essential to balance the two by also using moisturizing products in your routine, such as Moisturizing Shampoo and Leave-In Moisturizing Cream.
